Deck & Fence Staining in Greater Sacramento
Wood protection that survives a Sacramento summer.

Why wood goes gray here so quickly
That silver-gray surface is UV damage — sunlight breaking down lignin in the top layer of the timber. In the Sacramento Valley, a south-facing deck or fence with no protection can go from new to gray in a couple of seasons. The gray itself isn't rot, but it's the surface giving up, and once water starts sitting in checked and split boards the actual decay follows.
Cleaning that oxidized layer off before staining is not cosmetic. Stain applied over gray, dead fibre bonds to the dead fibre, and peels with it.
Choosing between transparent, semi-transparent and solid
Transparent stains show the most grain and give the least UV protection, so they need recoating soonest. Semi-transparent is the usual sweet spot for decks — enough pigment to block UV, still reads as wood. Solid stain looks closest to paint, hides weathered and mismatched boards best, and lasts longest on fences, but it films on the surface, so on a walking deck it eventually wears in the traffic lanes. We'll walk through which makes sense for your wood and how much you want to be doing this again.
Decks, fences and patio covers wear differently
A deck takes foot traffic, furniture and standing water and needs recoating far more often than a fence. A fence mostly needs UV protection, and the south and west runs will always fail first. Patio covers and pergolas sit in constant sun with no traffic at all, which makes them good candidates for a longer-lasting solid or semi-solid product. Pricing each of them off the same square-foot number is how jobs get underquoted and underdone.

How we approach deck & fence staining
Clean
Wood cleaner and a controlled wash to lift gray oxidized fibre, mildew and old failing stain without chewing up the timber.
Prep
Rough boards sanded, protruding fasteners set, and the wood given time to dry to the right moisture content — staining damp wood is wasted work.
Seal
Stain worked into the grain and end-cuts, with the coverage rate the product actually calls for rather than one thin pass.

Deck & Fence Staining — your questions
How often should a deck be re-stained in Sacramento?
Decks in this climate generally want attention every two to three years, and sunnier or heavily used decks sooner. Fences and patio covers usually stretch further — often four to six years with a semi-transparent or solid product.
Can you stain a brand new fence or deck?
New pressure-treated lumber usually needs to dry out for several weeks to a few months before it will accept stain properly. We'll tell you honestly if yours isn't ready yet rather than take the job and watch the stain sit on the surface.
Do you have to strip the old stain first?
It depends what's on there. Failing solid stain generally has to come off. Worn semi-transparent and transparent stains can often be cleaned, brightened and recoated. Jeff will tell you which situation you're in when he looks at it.
Can you stain and paint in the same visit?
Yes — plenty of jobs combine an exterior repaint with deck, fence or patio cover staining, and doing them together usually saves on setup and mobilization.
Are estimates really free?
Yes. Every estimate is free, in writing, with no pressure and no obligation. Most are scheduled within a few days of your call or text.
Does Jeff personally work on every job?
Yes. Central Painting does not send subcontractors. Jeff is on site from the first coat to the final walkthrough on every project.
Are you licensed?
Yes — California contractors license #785742, C-33 Painting and Decorating, issued October 2000 and current and active. Central Painting also carries a $25,000 contractor's bond. You can verify all of it yourself on the CSLB website at any time.
